In a note attached to the image it reads "Stepping (?) the Open Hearth Furnace American Rolling Mills, Ashland. (illegible text) iron runs out into the ladle; the full ladle weighs an average of 175 tons. What slag is left in the iron, boils (?) lighter, comes to the top and runs off through the oven in the slag pot, as can be seen in this picture. The slag that runs off weighs an average of from 15 to 20 tons."
