The Agriculture Water Quality Authority was created in 1994 by the Agriculture Water Quality Act (KRS 224.71-100 through 224.71-140). The members of the authority are appointed by the governor to represent the state’s agriculture and environmental community while developing and supporting a statewide agricultural water quality plan.

Agency description/history

The Department for Energy Development and Independence was formed in 2008 and is governed by KRS 152.712. The mission of the Department is to improve the quality and security of life for all Kentuckians by creating efficient, sustainable energy solutions and strategies; by protecting the environment; and by creating a base for strong economic growth. The Department for Energy Development and Independence is headed by a commissioner appointed by the Secretary of the Energy and Environment Cabinet with the approval of the Governor. The department is made up of the following divisions: Efficiency and Conservation; Renewable Energy; Biofuels; Energy Generation Transmission and Distribution; Carbon Management; and Fossil Energy Development.

The Department for Natural Resources oversees activities and programs related to forestry, conservation, mining, and land preservation. The department, through its divisions and partnerships, provides technical assistance, educational programs, and funding to assist the general public, landowners, institutions, industries, and communities in conserving and sustaining Kentucky's natural resources. In addition, the department is responsible for the inspection of timber harvests and mining operations to ensure compliance with laws that protect the public, the environment and Kentucky’s coal miners. The department is run by a Commissioner and is made up of the following divisions: the Division of Technical and Administrative Support, the Division of Conservation, the Division of Forestry, the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands, the Office of Mine Safety and Licensing, the Division of Mine Reclamation & Enforcement, the Division of Mine Permits, and the Division of Oil and Gas.

The Division of Abandoned Mine Lands was established in 1980. It works throughout the state’s coal fields to protect the public from health and safety problems caused by mining that occurred prior to 1982. The division is administered by the Energy and Environment Cabinet and is governed by KRS 350.550 to 350.597.

Agency description/history

This series provides a framework for the management of agencies and the administration of programs. Policies and procedures are developed to help agencies manage their programs and to assist staff in their administration. Policies derive from the authority of the agency, as established by the laws under which it operates. They are an authoritative communication that sets a definite course or method of action. Policies guide and help determine present and future decisions. Procedures reflect the steps resulting from policies to be followed in providing services or activities. Series may contain but is not limited to: Year; date; department; division; branch; organization chart; index; introduction; mission statements; policy statements; responsibilities of division; services; program objectives; employee requirements; procedural actions; glossary of terms; sample forms; disaster or emergency plans.

This series documents state agency activities and functions in a photographic format. Such activities may document the administrative functioning of an agency, its programs and operations. Records in this format (if determined to be archival), often replace or supplement more traditional kinds of recordkeeping, and may be critical to an understanding of the administrative history of an agency. When creating records in this format, agency personnel should properly identify the event being photographed and the participants. Series contains: Photographs and accompanying explanatory materials and finding aids.

The Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission was created in 1976 and is governed by KRS 146.425. Its members are appointed by the Governor. The Commission protects Kentucky’s natural heritage by identifying, acquiring and managing natural areas and working with others to protect biological diversity. It also educates Kentuckians as to the value and purpose of nature preserves and biodiversity conservation.
